It’s Hard to
Believe!
The Guinness Book of World Records has some
amazing facts. There’s a man who has grown ear hair 5.19 inches long.
Now there’s an amazing fact. Could it be real? It’s hard to believe.
Ripley’s Believe it or Not even acknowledged by it’s title that what it
present is hard to believe. Ripley’s displays a 1907 Rolls Royce made of
match sticks. 63 pints of glue and 1,016,711 ordinary match sticks were
used to make a 13 foot authentically detailed 3/4 scale model, complete
with moving engine parts, wheels that turn, and lights that work That’s
hard to believe.
But it seems some people have a much more
difficult time believing that Jesus rose from the dead... even if they
witnessed it happening! The religious leaders were so sure that Jesus
was an impostor, that they asked to have a guard placed at Jesus’ tomb.
They understood very well that Jesus had said that He would rise from
the dead. To insure that Jesus’ disciples would not steal His body and
claim that He rose from the dead, the guard was stationed, and the tomb
was sealed.
That means that the soldiers had a front row seat
when Jesus rose from the dead. They were there when “behold, there was a
great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and
came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. His appearance was like
lightning, and his clothes white as snow. And for fear of him the guards
trembled and became like dead men.” The next thing the guards do is run
to tell the religious leaders.
The religious leaders aren’t sure what to do.
They have a meeting and decide to pay off the soldiers. They instruct
the soldiers: “Tell people ‘His disciples came by night and stole him
away while we were sleeping.’ And if this comes to the governor’s ears,
we will satisfy him and keep you our of trouble.” Can you imagine?! They
were so intent on covering it up, that they missed the most wonderful
event. How could they not believe? How greatly deceived, how fully in
the grip of sinful desires they were to disbelieve what clearly
happened, complete with powerful angel and all.
We believe by the gracious gift of faith that God
has given us. How precious it is. Because through that faith we know
that Jesus not only died, but came to life on the third day. And because
of this faith we’ve received, we have a relationship with Jesus, we have
eternity with Him. Celebrate Easter with all your heart!
